Filling the Sketchbook II with Ardis DeFreece

Following on Filling the Sketchbook I, each week students will explore new media and concepts to fill those pages. We will work from life/direct observation, from photographic reference, and from imagination/expression. Students will learn principles of Drawing, Painting, and 2D design to expand their creative practice. Students who have not taken Filling the Sketchbook I can still take Filling the Sketchbook II.

This class can be taken asynchronously. Recording links will be sent after each class.

Week 1: Abstract Landscape (Watercolor and gouache or acrylic)E

Week 2: Atmospheric Landscape: (ink and watercolor)

Week 3: In the forest (ball point pen or permanent pen)

Week 4: Narrative details and vignettes (ink, pen, watercolor)

Week 5: People (pencil, pen, ink, watercolor)

Week 6: Sketching scenes with movement (pencil, pen, ink, watercolor)

Week 7: Reflections as Subject (watercolor or acrylic)

Week 8: Luminosity (watercolor and gouache or acrylic)

Experience level: Beginner to Intermediate


SUPPLIES:

40+ page watercolor paper sketchbook

Acrylic paint (Quinacridone Red, Ultramarine Blue, Hansa Yellow, Black, Titanium white)

Optional additional colors: Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre

Small set of watercolor paints (tube or dry)

Optional: Gouache (Quinacridone Red, Ultramarine Blue, Hansa Yellow, Black, Titanium white)

Water based media brushes a No. 10 round, No 10 or 12 flat, No 6 flat, No 6, No 2 flat, No 1 or 2 round (liner), No 2 script liner

India Ink

permanent ink pens (black)

Graphite pencils

Small bottle or tub of gesso

Workable fixative

Artist Tape (½ inch wide, nice to have ¼ inch as well)
